The £99 laptop, the Elonex One

I’ve had a Asus eeepc for a couple of months now, it’s great, small, cheap and it’s a good spec now for it’s size (and price!). I’ll write a review in another post… I just wanted to post a quick note about this…

Enter The Elonex One, it’s not as high spec’d as the Asus eeepc (the 4Gb one has a 4gb solid state disk & 512mb RAM), the One has just 1gb of disk. However it has a detachable screen (not really sure what the benefit there is) and it’s only £99 !! The eeepc is around £220 (if you can find one!). Both ship with open source software rather than Windows XP for example.

Take a look article on the Times web site…!

Have you got a Asus eeepc? What do you think about the new range of budget laptops?

  1. Now that is very interesting ….. if the drive was 2GB it’d be better. The 1GB doesn’t really lend itself to installing XP over the Open Source it comes with though.

Could be a good one for the kids though and pretty much disposable at that cost!

  2. By the comment that the chip technology is some 7 or so years old I’m not sure that the specification will be such that it’ll be capable of running XP.

The eeepc can, and the eeepc’s RAM can be upgraded (I’ve just replaced the 512mb DDR2 SODIMM in mine with 2gb).

The battle for the cheapest laptop is fine, but they’ve got to be of use!

  3. I looked at these type of devices for some time (whilst debating what would be the easiest and most sensible for me to sneak into my hand luggage on honeymoon!).

I ended up deciding that it needed to be more than just a little device, so ended up with a small laptop - 12″ Philips X53, had the odd problem but still a fantastic laptop!

Something for this now would have to ship with a sim card slot and allsorts of things, currently my phone does the job (Orange SPV m700) when I’m out and about, and I’ll probably upgrade that in the summer again (quite liking the look of the HTC Cruise?).
